PREREQUISITES
Laminate Theory, Elasticity Theory, matrix algebra and ordinary differential equations.

COURSE AIM
The course provides an understanding of the damage mechanisms in laminates and renders skills for experimental observation of different damage modes and their effect on thermo-elastic properties of laminates. Methodology of the theoretical modelling, in order to analyse the effect of damage on laminate performance, will give the student the ability to make modelling predictions of laminate behavior.

CONTENTS
Unidirection composite properties: Fibers, matrix, interfaces. Micromechanical models of termo-elastic properties. Mechanisms of failure. Elastic macroproperties. Failure criteria. Laminate failure analysis: Stress state, stiffness and compliance matrices in arbitrary system of coordinates. Kinematic assumptions of the laminate theory. Laminate constitutive equations. Ply discount model and stepwise laminate failure. Fracture toughness: Crack growth analysis based on energy balance. DCB test. Data reduction methods: beam theory, compliance callibration, energy - area calculation. Damage accumulation: Experimental results on transverse cracking, delamination, crack branching. Micromechanical approach: reduction of thermo-elastic properties because of damage, damage evolution. Models for transverse cracking: sheat lag model, variational methods. Continuum damage mechanics modelling.
