CONTENTS
In the course we will, from a management perspective, study some issues related to production management in companies, all of which are related to how a company works in order to keep the production competitive. The course provides in-depth knowledge about how activities and resources, both inside and outside the production, affect the costs of the company. In the course several practical models and methods will be discussed, e.g. inventory models, linear-programming, and planning & cost controls (ABC). We will critically analyze these models and methods especially in relation to overall firm profitability.
We will discuss production in a systemic perspective. The problem of conflicting goals within the production department and between the production department and other areas (e.g. sales, engineering, construction) is of special interest.
TEACHING
The contact hours consists of lectures, classes, computer exercises and seminars. In the lectures, the theoretical content is outlined. This content is then clearified by examples and discussion in classes. The computer exercises provide an opportunity for students, on a voluntary basis, to expand their knowledge. The compulsory cases and seminars constitute an important part of the course. From a fixed frame of reference, the students choose relatively freely the area to conduct their case studies. In these cases, modern computertools will be used.
