COURSE AIM
The scope of the course is to give knowledge concerning design of advanced steel structures with emphasis on steel structures frequently used in industrial buildings.
CONTENTS
Design of welded girders and columns: Effective cross sections, local buckling, column buckling, laterial-torsional buckling (40%).
Fatigue: Stress range, Palmgren-Miners rule, fatigue strength of details, welded connections, bolted connections (20%).
Design of shell structures: Different types of shell structures, stability problems (20%).
Optimization of steel structures (10%).
Design of advanced steel structures (10%).
ASSIGNMENTS
The students shall design and optimize an advanced steel structure. The scope of the optimization is that the structure should fulfill the performance requirements at lowest possible cost. For approval, the assignment should be presented with calculations as well as drawings. The computer program STAAD III is used as an aid for the calculations and SteelCad for the drawings.
TEACHING
The course is given in the form of lectures and assignments.
