COURSE AIM
The main objective of the course is to give basic knowledge in theoretical and applied rock mechanics. Special interest is focused on rock monitoring, design and rock reinforcement principles. Computer methods for stress and strain analysis are also introduced and applied to rock mechanics problems.

CONTENTS
Analytical and numerial design (25%) Deformations and stresses around excavations. Analytical and numerical methods are covered. Failure of underground excavations. Failure mechanisms and failure criteria. Hemispherical projection. Overstressed rock and blast damage. Rock support and reinforcement (34%) Support and reinforcement principles. Ground reaction and support reaction characteristics. Types and action of different support elements. Rock mass characterization and rock reinforcement. Grouting in rock. Instrumentation and monitoring of slopes and underground constructions (9%) Rock mass instrumentation and monitoring. Security regulations. Field work (32%) Rock mechanics applied to practical problems at a Swedish mine.

TEACHING
The teaching consists of lectures, home assignments, laboratory assignments and a field trip. Laboratory lessons, written tests and the field trip are compulsory.
