PREREQUISITES
Program Construction SMD056, Digital Design SMD069, Processor/Software Interface SMD082 or equivalent.
COURSE AIM
The course is designed to give the student experience in working in a team responsible for the design of a large digital system, design tool, hardware/software codesign or other computer engineering project. The project is chosen to reflect the interdisciplinary nature of computer engineering, so that the different background of each participating student can contribute to the project's development. Programming-oriented, design-oriented, VLSI-, network and electronics-oriented students are given a unique opportunity to cooperate toward a common goal. The project is selected by the examiner.
CONTENTS
The course is organized as a development/research team under close supervision and normally under a strict timetable. Firm deadlines represent an important reality aspect in the course. Depending on choice of project, the students will work either individually or in groups, and will be responsible for architectural decisions, choice of methodology, evaluation and testing of completed work, maintaining communication with other groups as necessary, delivering readable documentation, and for working effectively under a hierarchically-organized project management.
TEACHING
Instruction consists of obligatory group meetings. Project students are required to carry out the work assignments they receive from their supervisor. Sometimes this work can be organized and carried out in smaller groups, in which a group leader is responsible to the supervisor for attendance of group members and for completion of work assignments according to schedule.
EXAMINATION
Examination is by project report.
